MDG House
The unit that went under renovation is part of an old family traditional house built on rock foundations with thick rocky walls characteristic of the Kras region of Slovenia. The main idea behind this renovation is to adopt the quality of the old building and translate it into a quality of contemporary living.
The task behind this design was to divide this old traditional house and make two separate apartment units. Thus, the next actions have been taken: 1. The old entrance have been replaced with a new one located on the opposite side of the house that allowed new intimate entrance partition to be organized as well as a back yard; 2.The old wooden staircase that was connecting the different levels of the old house was removed that offered a division of space and organization of the individual units; 3. The ceiling opening was closed with reinforced transparent glass to allow visual connection between the floors while fully functioning flooring as well as to let the light in the dining area; 4. New staircase has been designed and replaced from the original position according to the new spatial organization of the apartment with an open space concept; 5. A wall has been removed to open the dining area and a steel beam painted in red as a support of the ceiling became a prominent design element in the space. Author: Milan Dinevski
