Micro-Megastructure
Small urban interventions possess immense power since they are immediate, activate the citizens and promote awareness for public lifestyle. However, what they lack is a coherent and recognizable frame or network on a higher and systematic level. Looking at the concept of Megastructure from the 1960’s as a social system aimed at questioning the notion of authoritative city planning while promoting citizens’ involvement, we see a great potential in translating the fundamental principles of the Megastructure for contemporary use. The Megastructure offers a comprehensive system for alternative urban practices but the concept remained ever since on a theoretical and speculative level. Having in mind the advancement and interdisciplinarity of technologies and media since the 1960’s we propose to re-investigate the relationship between the “hardware’’ and the “software’’ which are the main elements of the Megastructure and offer a systematic solution to the small scale interventions. In other words, we want to establish a new connection between the micro scale interventions and the systematic or large scale thinking. We named the concept Micro-Megastructure.
